Manchester City and PSG to face no action over alleged breaches of EU competition law

La Liga complained about state aid to European CommissionSubmission reportedly provided insufficient evidence Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain will face no action from the European Commission after allegations they breached EU competition law. La Liga’s president, Javier Tebas, had filed complaints about the clubs’ alleged use of state resources under the EU’s foreign subsidies regulation. Tebas alleged in his submission in July 2023 that City and PSG receive resources under non-market conditions from the governments of Abu Dhabi and Qatar respectively, disrupting markets by enabling them to spend more than their rivals on players and coaches, and that the clubs obtain sponsorship income at levels that do not align with fair market value. The clubs denied the allegations and pointed to their accounts as proof of no wrongdoing. They also claimed Tebas had a history of attacking them owing to envy of their success and financial resources. Continue reading...

How Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami struggles mirror his time with PSG

The Argentine superstar has been top-class, but a lack of structure behind him has been his team’s undoing. Sound familiar? Inter Miami are used to having a target on their back by now, but no opponent has hit them harder than Minnesota United did on Saturday in a 4-1 rout. As if inflicting Lionel Messi’s heaviest-ever defeat in Major League Soccer wasn’t enough, the Loons took the opportunity to rub it in on social media, labelling South Florida’s Galacticos a “Pink Phony Club” – a jibe that irked David Beckham. Beckham’s frustration, along with everyone else’s at Inter Miami, has built over a number of weeks. The Herons are experiencing an early-season reckoning. Their Concacaf Champions Cup challenge was ended by a rampant Vancouver Whitecaps who ran up a 5-1 aggregate scoreline to make the final despite Inter Miami making the competition a big priority. Newcastle v Chelsea: Premier League – live

Updates from the 12pm BST kick-off at St James’ ParkMatchday live – the latest news and buildup to Sunday’s games “Was wondering over the week, where I watched my club go out of the Champions League with strength but not quite enough of it, I did wonder... Would Newcastle do well against this PSG team?” writes Kieran McKintosh. “Physical midfields. Lightning-quick forward lines. Towering defenders. PSG have the better goalie, but other than that I did wonder if Newcastle have the tools to give them more of a run for their money.” They thrashed them last season, didn’t they? A different PSG, I realise, but it supports your argument. I was surprised just how much Arsenal’s fast start unnerved PSG on Wednesday night. That said, I still think they’re the best team in Europe and I wonder whether Inter’s approach might be more effective. If you go after PSG, the chances are you’ll be picked off, what, nine times out of 10? We have three more games so this won’t define the season, but for sure this is an important game. We played Everton and Liverpool with the same team as today. They are doing well and it’s good to continue that. Continue reading...

‘We’ll be back stronger’: Merino insists Arsenal will learn from Champions League exit

Midfielder says season is ‘a huge learning curve’Arsenal need seven points to finish second in league Mikel Merino has vowed Arsenal’s young squad will learn from being eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals and is convinced they will “be back stronger” next season. Paris Saint-Germain booked their place in the final against Inter with a 2-1 win in the second leg, meaning Arsenal will end another campaign without a trophy. They saw off PSV and Real Madrid to reach the last four in the Champions League for the first time since 2009, having been knocked out by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals last year. Mikel Arteta’s disappointment is palpable after Arsenal fail to seize big chance

Defeat against Paris Saint-Germain was no disgrace but the manager will be frustrated because he will feel it could have been very different Rage, anger, frustration. A bad feeling in the tummy. Mikel Arteta felt the emotions churn, these his words as he tried to process it all. And this was on Saturday night after his Arsenal team had lost 2-1 at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League. The manager’s idea was to harness the pain, to have it inspire one of the most famous results in club history when they went to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday for the Champions League semi-final second leg. In the end, after a tumultuous game, Arteta would be left with pretty much the same sense. Continue reading...
