Reflections on a memorable evening

FixturesAston Villa Vs. West Ham United - Fri, Jan 10th 2025, 20:00 Villa Park played host to another unforgettable evening on Friday, as players, staff, supporters and custodians came together to celebrate Aston Villa's 150th anniversary.  Unai Emery's men booked their place in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over West Ham United, on a night where a century and a half of this historic club was honoured in B6.  The Villans took to the field in a special, one-off, black commemorative strip, inspired by the first kits worn by the club, as goals from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers sealed a comeback victory, adding to what was already a spine-tingling occasion under the lights.  From another stunning tifo banner in The Holte End, to a whole host of Villa legends being given a heroes' reception at half-time, here's a recap of the night...'Prepared' A magnificent tifo banner of the 150th Anniversary crest adorned The Holte End as the two teams emerged from the tunnel ahead of kick-off.  Aston Villa became the first team in the UK to place a crest on their playing kit back in 1878, adopting the Scottish lion rampant, sourced by William McGregor himself.  The crest, inspired by the one that featured on those kits and authentically redrawn from the earliest sources available for the anniversary, was loud and proud for all to see across VP, as Unai Emery's men took to the field. “The club's got a big, big history. When I joined, I knew it from the start. We want to make the club proud.” - Youri TielemansSuited and booted Emery's side scrubbed up well in their black, commemorative 150th Anniversary kit - an authentic ode to the earliest strips worn by the Villans back in the 1870s.  The classy number was sported by the Villa players under the lights, whose squad numbers were printed on the back in retro typography, without player names.  A unique look, for a special evening. The AV150 Range And the kit wasn't the only special commemorative apparel on show at Villa Park, either.  A special AV150 leisure range was showcased by Emery's charges as they touched down for action in B6.  A stunning 150th Anniversary hoodie was among the garments the Villans arrived in, with the full range available to shop online and from the Villa Store. “It was really special. That’s the right way to celebrate it for the fans. I think we needed a win.” - Amadou OnanaLegends assemble A fitting moment for some of Aston Villa's most treasured individuals was observed at half-time, as a host of club legends were taken on a lap of honour around the Villa Park turf.  Des Bremner, Lee Hendrie and Shaun Teale were among the former Villans paraded around the field to a true heroes' reception from those in the stands, as VP came together to honour such significant figures from throughout the club's history. “I’m very happy. The 150th anniversary we were here celebrating. We can be happy with this victory and share it with our supporters.” - Unai EmeryThe Magic of the FA Cup A challenging first half left much to be anticipated after the break, and the cherry on top of a wonderful, poignant evening was a roaring comeback from Villa's 11 Lions.  Onana's close-range finish dragged Emery's men level 19 minutes from time, before five minutes later, the comeback was complete, and the roof of Villa Park lifted, when Rogers popped up to notch the would-be winner.  A valiant fightback, in a magical competition, at an iconic stadium, from a special club, on a truly unforgettable night.  UTV! 💜

Onana on ‘special’ night

FixturesAston Villa Vs. West Ham United - Fri, Jan 10th 2025, 20:00 Amadou Onana discussed the feeling of scoring and winning on a “special” night at Villa Park, as Aston Villa celebrated their 150th Anniversary with a 2-1 win over West Ham United.  The Villans booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup, coming from behind to beat the Hammers with two goals in six second-half minutes. And, having netted the goal which dragged Villa level with 19 minutes to play, Onana described his emotions on the VillaTV Post-Match Live show. He said: “It was really special. That’s the right way to celebrate it for the fans. I think we needed a win. “They came tonight supporting us, giving us the extra cheer we needed, so I’m really grateful for that. “It was very special because I’ve never scored at Villa Park so far. “The last couple of weeks for me have been very frustrating. I’ve been out with my injury for four or five weeks, then I came back, started enjoying it, then I had the flu, went back out the team. “I really needed this energy and the goal. The little stare [celebration] was to let them [Villa fans] know I’m back! “That’s the part of my game that was missing a little bit last season, and I’m trying to add more goals to my game.” The Belgian midfielder explained how, after an opening period in which Unai Emery’s men were frustrated by Graham Potter’s Irons, a tactical tweak at the break gave them more joy in the second half. Onana was pleased with his own performance, having come on as a 23rd-minute substitute, and lauded the team’s character to turn the tie around. “The first half, they were very, very compact. “They didn’t let any balls through the middle, so it was quite hard for me and Youri [Tielemans]. “But then at half-time, the gaffer made a couple of tactical changes, took Bouba [Kamara] on the side to play a little free, to create an overload on the side. “Once we got there, we did pretty well, so I’m very happy with the performance tonight. “Coming in was really difficult because I didn’t have any warming up. I didn’t even see Ross [Barkley] getting injured. “I managed to find my rhythm throughout the game and I’m quite happy with it tonight.”

Rogers salutes Villa character

FixturesAston Villa Vs. West Ham United - Fri, Jan 10th 2025, 20:00 Morgan Rogers hailed Aston Villa’s determination and courage as they fought back to see off West Ham United and seal FA Cup progress. The hosts fell behind to Lucas Paqueta’s ninth-minute strike at Villa Park and had to be patient before breaking down a well-organised Hammers side and secure victory courtesy of two goals in five second-half minutes. Amadou Onana poked home from close range to level matters before Morgan Rogers applied a well-taken near-post finish to Ollie Watkins’ low cross. The quickfire goals completed a dramatic turnaround and clinched a 2-1 third-round victory for the Villans. “To go one-nil down is not what we want but it’s about how we react, how we show our determination and courage within us to come back in the game,” said Rogers. “Thankfully we got the win and I thought we played pretty well. “We controlled the game and when you keep pushing and keep pushing, you hope it goes in. And luckily it did.” Asked what changed in the second half, Rogers replied: “A bit of belief, a bit more patience, a bit more forward thinking – I think we had a lot of the ball in the first half, but probably not risking enough or trying to go forward and make that difficult pass. “In the second half we did. I know we didn’t always get it right, but we create more chances, create more mayhem in our attacking third and that’s where our goals came from. “So, we’re just happy we won.” In-form Rogers’ seventh goal of the season and third in his last four matches sealed the success and booked Villa’s place in the next stage the FA Cup. Focus will now turn to Sunday’s fourth-round draw as Villa discover their opponents. Midfielder Rogers admits Villa are taking it one match at a time, but have their sights set a potential run in the cup. “Why can’t we win it? That’s how we’re looking at it,” he said. “But we’ll take it game by game, anything can happen in a cup competition, you don’t know who you’ll draw, where you’ll play. “We’ll just take it game by game and try to win – but we want to go on a run, we’re in this competition to win it. “It’s an historic competition in England, we all know how much it means and we’re going to try our best to win it.”
