With Gareth Southgate leaving his role, BBC Sport looks how other England managers have done. How would you rank them?
Reached World Cup semi-final and two Euros finalsHowe, Potter and Tuchel near the top of shortlist Gareth Southgate has announced he has stepped down as England’s manager after eight years. The Football Association had hoped he would extend his contract after he led the team to the final of Euro 2024 but Southgate has decided to seek a new challenge. “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” Southgate said. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.” Continue reading...
England manger Gareth Southgate & midfielder Declan Rice respond to the criticism the team have faced for the team's performance during their 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday.
England manager Gareth Southgate says he has learned to block out criticism and that he and his players have been "brutally honest" about where they need to improve.
Foden: ‘We expect more from ourselves’Stones backs City teammate to produce against Slovenia Phil Foden has said that the intensity in training has gone up as England look to build their physical condition before facing Slovenia on Tuesday. Gareth Southgate raised concerns about the level of England’s pressing after their disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark but Foden has been encouraged by the preparations for the team’s final match in Group C. Captain says ‘a lot of these players were part’ of past flops‘They know how tough it is to play in these tournaments’ Harry Kane has hit back at Gary Lineker by saying that pundits and former players need to show more responsibility, remember that they wore the shirt and were part of England’s failures at previous tournaments. Lineker, who is the lead anchor of the BBC’s coverage of Euro 2024, has caused a massive stir within the England camp after describing the team’s performance against Denmark as “shit” on the podcast The Rest is Football. Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand have also delivered withering assessments of Gareth Southgate’s side, who face Slovenia in their final match in Group C on Tuesday, and the tone of the criticism has left Kane unimpressed. Crystal Palace playmaker has only one senior cap but may offer Gareth Southgate something different against Slovenia Adam Wharton has grown used to the extraordinary over the course of this season as he has bolted from Blackburn in the Championship to Crystal Palace in the Premier League to England at Euro 2024. But the scene on Thursday night, as England took stock in their dressing room after the 1-1 draw against Denmark, had to have been an eye-opener. “He was just trying to keep us all positive,” Wharton says. “He was saying: ‘It’s not the end of the world.’” The 20-year-old midfielder is not talking about the manager, Gareth Southgate, or a senior member of the squad. He is talking about Prince William, who had swept in to see the players in his role as the Football Association president, the corridors having been cleared, connecting doors locked, bodyguards prominent. Displays in first two games heavily criticised‘Everyone is behind the manager’ England’s players have come out fighting after a barrage of criticism, with Jordan Pickford throwing support behind Gareth Southgate and Jarrod Bowen shrugging off Gary Lineker calling out the display against Denmark. Southgate, who is expected to tweak personnel rather than play a new system against Slovenia on Tuesday, has had his tactics come under fire from television pundits and former professionals after England’s first two matches. There is also unease at Luke Shaw, the squad’s only left-back, being unlikely to recover from a hamstring injury in time to face Slovenia after he missed training again on Saturday. Southgate is learning the best players don’t always make the best team. He needs to change formation and personnel There appears to be anxiety in the England camp. Their two performances in the Euros have not been what anyone expected. The important thing, however, is that Gareth Southgate’s experimentation has not cost too much, leaving his team top of the group with a game to play but with plenty of improvement required. The best teams are balanced and I do not think England have found that. The win over Serbia and draw against Denmark have to offer an awakening to the players and management before it is too late to correct the problems. Tuesday’s game against Slovenia is a chance to prepare the team for the knockout stages. A dominant victory would give momentum and rhythm and rebuild confidence. If England fail to win they could finish second in the group and face Germany in the last 16 or even end up third. Continue reading...
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice had no chemistry in this formation. Was it ever likely to work, simply slotting in a talented passer? In the search for positives from an afternoon of ghost football in Frankfurt, you did at least have to give England one thing. This team has so far shown complete electoral neutrality in Germany. England are both laboured and conservative. Is there time to fix it? Two things about this England team leap out at this stage. Frankly, they look like atomised, shot, terrified. And second, the most obvious problem England have had is a complete lack of centre ground. This is a tournament semi-favourite without a functioning midfield. It is something Gareth Southgate took into this tournament, tinkered with, worried away at, and which he has not been able to fix. Continue reading...
Gareth Southgate's "experiment" of playing Trent Alexander-Arnold in England's midfield is surely over, writes Phil McNulty.
England's draw with Denmark was "baffling and concerning", according to the pundits, but what exactly is going wrong for the Three Lions?
Danish supporters had more to shout about as English contingent left frustrated by disjointed performance England remain on course to qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2024 by topping Group C, but you could be forgiven for imagining they were going home already after a lethargic error-strewn 1-1 draw with Denmark left fans segueing from jeers to boos as the final whistle was blown. After a day of raucous but law-abiding behaviour in the centre of Frankfurt, an estimated 20,000 Three Lions fans made the journey to the Frankfurt Arena, but judging by their mood afterwards a fair number regretted their decision. “Crap”, “dreadful”, “awful” and “same old, same old” were some of the printable responses.
