Marco Silva has successfully redesigned his team after losing his key midfielder and now sit in sight of Europe Fulham were widely expected to regress this season. As much as they tried to prolong it, they lost the very public battle of retaining João Palhinha, the important cog in their midfield opting to sign for Bayern Munich in the summer. Adding to the challenges, they have not had a reliable goalscorer since Aleksandar Mitrovic’s departure a year earlier and lost several first-team players in the past transfer window. Yet early results have dispelled concerns of a decline. Fulham sit sixth in the Premier League – up from 11th at this stage last season. The departure of Palhinha posed a unique challenge: try to replace an irreplaceable player or adapt without him. Marco Silva opted for the latter. Without their midfield destroyer, the manager has pushed Fulham higher up the pitch, now deploying the fifth-highest defensive line in the league, behind only Manchester City, Brighton, Tottenham and Arsenal (Fulham ranked 17th last season). The guests at The Corner Terrace restaurant in Ealing were not too disheartened despite a 1-0 defeat against England As Dragan Stojkovic’s side kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign, members of west London’s sizeable Serbian community watched on with hope but also real expectation that a potential shock was on the cards. At The Corner Terrace restaurant on Ealing Common, enthusiastic locals gathered to have traditional delicacies such as pljeskavica and gibanica, and to take in the second match of group C after Denmark’s draw with Slovenia. Jumping out of their seats frequently during the extended spells of Serbia possession, every momentum shift felt like a collective shot on target. Continue reading...
Head coach plotting to take down Euro 2024 contenders‘We are going to fight … and give more than the maximum’ About six questions into Dragan Stojkovic’s pre-match press conference at the Arena AufSchalke, somebody offered Serbia’s head coach the chance for a quick slam dunk. The England team – or at least the country’s media – have underestimated Serbia, went the spiel. What do you say to that? “I am here to talk about Serbia, not England,” Stojkovic growled. “They are a team that tries to be the champion of Europe, but to achieve that they have to do it on the pitch. We know what system, what players, there are no surprises there. What is important is that our players have all the information on the team. We have it, but we do not forget about ourselves – it’s us who have to do our parts of the job.” Continue reading...
Fans were baffled when Mitrovic and Milinkovic-Savic left major European clubs but their attacking danger remains Serbia tend to make a mark at international tournaments and in Germany the interesting element is that two of their three most important players ply their trade in Saudi Arabia. Aleksandar Mitrovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, teammates at Al-Hilal, join Dusan Tadic as the individuals likely to pose the greatest danger to England in Gelsenkirchen. Mitrovic, familiar to English fans from his eight years with Newcastle and Fulham, has been mocked in Serbia over his move to the Gulf. The striker has been a Newcastle fan since childhood and it has been suggested that if he loved Saudi Arabia so much he should have submitted his CV to his favourite club rather than playing in the country. Forward says Serbia have studied Iceland’s Wembley win‘There are things that can be copied from them’ Serbia will take inspiration from Iceland’s recent victory at Wembley as they plot to surprise England on Sunday, according to their centre-forward Dusan Vlahovic. The meeting in Gelsenkirchen will be Serbia’s first at a European Championship in its current form and the hope is that a talented but mercurial side will step up to the plate. They bowed out after the group stage of the past two World Cups but Vlahovic, who forms part of a potentially formidable attack, sees a blueprint for early success in the way England were tamed a week ago. Team have been in decline for 10 years but Sergej Barbarez, the fifth manager since 2022, has a clear strategy to reverse that Sergej Barbarez has been all over the Bosnian media for the past 40 days. Newspapers, magazines, TV shows, podcasts – he doesn’t decline any interviews. Nor does he avoid any questions. He is excited, constantly smiling, and is not hiding that he regards this as the first and perhaps the most important part of his job as the new manager of Bosnia and Herzegovina: to make the national team relevant again. On Monday the former Bosnia forward’s side play England at St James’ Park in his first game and his position is clear. “Of course, the results are important,” he says. “But at this point, we want to use the upcoming games, like the one against England, and the whole year ahead of us, to change the perspective of the national team. We want this team to be successful and respected again, but more than that, we want it to be loved again. The national team lost its importance and appeal for players and for the fans. Playing for the national team has lost its cult status. We want players to feel proud and excited again for playing for their country. That is the first step.” Continue reading...
Manager has brought silverware and Champions League football back to Juve but it may not be enough At a certain point you started to wonder if Massimiliano Allegri would strip all the way down to his underwear. The Juventus manager had already thrown off his jacket, and then a few moments later, his tie. Now he was furiously undoing the buttons of his shirt and bellowing toward the crowd. Juventus were moments away from winning the Coppa Italia. They had led Atalanta from the fourth minute, when Dusan Vlahovic ran beyond Isak Hien and swept a right-footed finish past Marco Carnesecchi. The Serb put the ball in the net again in the 73rd, only for this goal to be disallowed for offside. Continue reading...
Serbia reach first Euros as independent nation after 2-2 drawHungary’s fight back to end Montenegro’s qualification hopes Serbia have qualified for Euro 2024 – their first Euros finals berth as an independent nation – after a nervy 2-2 home draw against Bulgaria in their final Group G game on Sunday. Dragan Stojkovic’s side knew a point would be enough to qualify, even if Montenegro beat already-qualified Hungary. Montenegro, the third-placed team in the group, went ahead in Budapest but eventually lost 3-1. Serbia, meanwhile, fell behind in the second half before Srdjan Babic made certain of qualification with a late leveller. Continue reading...
